🧾 Job Description: Linux + Docker System Builder for Offline Self-Hosted Knowledge Platform

Location: Remote
Type: Freelance Contract
Budget: Fixed or hourly (TBD based on experience)
Estimated Duration: 2–4 weeks (part-time or flexible)

📋 Project Summary:

We’re building a self-contained, offline-first knowledge and AI system that runs entirely from a compact Linux-based mini PC. It will use local web interfaces to provide access to key information, educational resources, and chatbot tools — even when completely disconnected from the internet.

This is an exciting opportunity to help prototype the platform that serves as a digital library, reference hub, and interactive assistant — all in one box.

🔧 Key Responsibilities:

  • Set up a clean Ubuntu or Pop!_OS system on a mini PC

  • Build and configure a modular Docker-based stack, including:

    • Local AI chatbot (Ollama + OpenWebUI or equivalent)

    • Offline Wikipedia reader (Kiwix-serve)

    • Ebook reader/library (Calibre-Web)

    • Offline educational platform (Kolibri with Khan Academy content)

    • Optional: Offline map tile server (OpenMapTiles, TileServer-GL)

  • Create a simple local web portal (served via Nginx or similar) to link users to each tool

  • Write automated setup and update scripts for easy replication

  • Prepare the system to be fully documented and deployable via GitHub

✅ Preferred Skills:

  • Strong Linux system administration experience (Ubuntu or Pop!_OS preferred)

  • Proficiency with Docker and Docker Compose

  • Familiarity with self-hosted LLM tooling (e.g., Ollama, LocalAI)

  • Experience configuring offline tools like Kiwix, Calibre-Web, or Kolibri

  • Scripting experience in Bash (Python is a bonus)

  • Comfort setting up local web portals and reverse proxies (e.g., Nginx)

  • Ability to document everything clearly for non-expert users

🧠 Bonus Points For:

  • Familiarity with content packaging (e.g., ZIM files, eBook libraries, Kolibri channels)

  • Experience building user dashboards or local-only web tools

  • Knowledge of offline maps or OpenStreetMap-based systems

  • Interest in education tech, offline-first systems, or decentralized tools

📦 Deliverables:

  • Fully functional local prototype system with Dockerized services

  • A clean GitHub repo with:

    • README.md (install instructions and system overview)

    • setup.sh and update scripts

    • Docker Compose configuration

    • Structured folders for models, books, wiki content, educational data

  • Test notes and documentation for Mini PC deployment
