Kari’s Law, Ray Baum Act and e911 Compliance

Kari’s Law and the Ray Baum Act are new regulations for emergency dialing from PBX systems (also known as MTLS – Multi-Line Telephone Systems). These regulations make emergency dialing rules more stringent and open up additional liability for companies that aren’t compliant.

All capable PBX systems must be compliant with Kari’s law immediately.

All capable PBX systems must be compliant with the Ray Baum Act by Feb. 2021.

All newly installed PBX systems must be compliant today.

Kari’s Law / Ray Baum Act Information:

Kari’s Law

  • All phones must be able to dial 911 directly without a prefix.
  • PBX must be configured to notify a central contact whenever 911 is dialed.

Ray Baum Act

  • The Ray Baum Act aims to improve ‘Dispatchable Location’ information sent to authorities when 911 is dialed.
  • Dispatchable Location must include more granular information than traditional 911 addresses such as building number, floor, suite, room, or other relevant information that can best assist first responders in an emergency.
